Summertime, and the livin's easy

New England knows summer. Who does clam bakes, festivals, farmers markets, art hops on the beach, and lobster rolls better than New England! There’s so much culture, bounty, sun and fun to soak up in the New England Summer, you absolutely can’t miss a single moment. Tour our own New Hampshire seacoast and enjoy some of our local festivals such as Oyster Fest in Newmarket, Seafood Fest in Hampton, or the Independence Day festival in Exeter.

But this summer, don’t let the festivities stop at your doorstep! Create your own summer festival, right in your own backyard! Oversized umbrellas or canvas covered gazebos in vibrant, sunny colors create a shaded spots that still pack a punch. Light them up in the evening with hanging lanterns, decorative rope lights, votive chandeliers, or solar lamps. Basic tan, black and white furniture is nice, but why not try something bolder? Lime, cayenne, lemon, magenta, cerulean…. Refresh your tables and chairs with a splash of color from In-Home’s line of Maison Blanche furniture paints (we’ll even teach you how to use them!) Company C’s line of outdoor fabrics that are perfect for your backyard entertaining space- think new chair cushions, pillows, chaise longue cushions and outdoor rugs.

Set a festive table, and create coastal centerpieces from your beach combing finds. A large glass hurricane is a perfect spot to collect shells, seaglass, and polished rocks. Sunflowers and stripes make for cheerful table settings. Floating candles in mason jars with pebbles, a burlap runner and starfish evoke a rustic coastal feel.

New England summers come complete with mosquitoes, much to our disappointment. Citronella candles and oil in tiki torches are an obvious choice, but did you know you can grow the plant itself, and that works just as well? Plus, it’s a tall plant and can double as privacy. Potted mint or lemon balm keeps bugs at bay and can be moved from the picnic table, to the end tables to the gazebo.

From the beach, to the streets to your own backyard, make this summer one to remember!
