Why Homeowners Should Stop Asking THIS Question…
THE Question
I’m sure that the majority of kitchen designers have received this question at least once from a client or potential client before the start of a kitchen remodeling project: “Can you please send me an estimated cost for a kitchen remodel?” The problem is that homeowners ask this question before providing a budget or critical information needed to come up with a somewhat accurate estimate.
The Challenge
The challenge for a designer in estimating the cost of a kitchen remodel is that it varies widely and heavily depends on a few different factors including:
Size of the kitchen
Where you live
What you can afford
How much construction you want done
What products you select (high-end vs low-end)
This is why it’s important to provide your designer with as much information as possible (the more the better!). Providing this information allows the designer to give you an accurate estimated cost catered to your specific kitchen remodel and prevents the homeowner from feeling misled and lied to.
Let’s Be Realistic
According to the 2018 Houzz and Home Survey, 77% of homeowners said they had a budget in mind when planning their project, but nearly 50% go over their budget. This statistic is most likely the result of being unrealistic and or not taking every aspect of the remodeling process into account.
The best thing that a homeowner can do for themselves, as well as the designer, is to be as realistic as possible. More often than not, the unexpected arises during a kitchen reno. From our experience, we have seen everything from small to large unexpected costs. The small costs can be something as simple as the homeowner upgrading their granite counter tops or going with a more expensive hardware. The larger unexpected cost that can really rack up the bills include construction changes such as removing a load bearing wall. In the end, to be prepared as much as possible, you need to include these unexpected costs into your budget.
